Help Us Partner With Tim Duncan in the Wake of Hurricane Irma
As a Florida-based business, we spent much of last week on high alert.
Hurricane Irma, a powerful Category 5 storm, was coming straight toward our city after sweeping through the Atlantic. Before making landfall on the mainland United States, it devastated many regions in its path.
One of the greatest things about the company we’ve built is the true feeling of community -- the other St. Petersburg, FL area businesses, and our readers and clients checked in on us during this stressful time. It reminded us how truly grateful we are; we’re so appreciative and wanted to give back.
NBA player Tim Duncan is using his influence to ask for help, and we thought it made perfect sense to partner on his mission.
Duncan donated $250,000 to the U.S. Virgin Islands to aid those affected by Hurricane Irma. The effort is personal for the retired superstar, who was born and raised on the Islands, and lived through Hurricane Hugo as a young teen.
In his essay for The Players’ Tribune, the media-shy Duncan writes, “I’m a little of my comfort zone here.” But, he continues later on, “the people there, many of whom are old friends of mine, are suffering.”
Duncan is using YouCaring, a crowdfunding website, to raise money for those affected by the storm. The campaign is called 21 U.S. Virgin Island Relief Fund.
As of this writing, the campaign has raised a little over $2.15 million of its $5 million goal. Duncan pledged to match donations up to the first $1 million.
At The Penny Hoarder, we’d also like to do our part.
First, we’d like to thank our advertiser Ben Robinson at Bookkeeper Business Academy for sending in $5,000. We've matched his donation, and are sending $10K to the relief efforts. (Hopefully our other advertisers will join in, too!)
If you’d like to make a donation, visit the YouCaring campaign here. Any amount can make a difference!
Help us put a little money back into the pockets of those who really need it now.
