Woohoo! We Reached 5 Million Fans on Facebook

On June 1, we experienced a big milestone: The Penny Hoarder Facebook page hit 5 million likes!

When our social media director of live programming, Jeff Stevens, joined the team in May 2016, we were at 1.9 million Facebook fans. We hit 4 million seven months later in December 2016. All told, the page grew by 3 million likes in a little over a year’s time.

“Seeing our rapid fan growth only shows how helpful The Penny Hoarder is and how it’s improving our readers’ lives,” said Stevens. “When our fans tag their friends and family in our posts, it makes them feel like they’re the first to know about the latest deal or jaw-dropping money saving tip that no other publisher is writing about.”

Jumping off the achievement, The Penny Hoarder wanted to find a way to say thanks — and include our awesome readers in the process.

Saying Thank You to the Fans

The video and social media teams came together to brainstorm a concept.

“Several awesome ideas were thrown into the mix, but we kept coming back to the same common thread: gratitude,” said Jennifer McCarthy, director of video at The Penny Hoarder.

The team asked for staff volunteers to star in the video. To do what, exactly? Read feedback from fans.

“We wanted to celebrate the people who have gotten us here. We couldn't go out and hug or shake the hands of every single fan, but if we could use their own words of thanks coupled with ours, then we could form some measure of togetherness,” McCarthy said. 

Her team shot the video on a Monday, a few days out in anticipation of the milestone.

“It was an amazing shoot,” she said. “Organic, seamless and, most importantly, genuine.”

McCarthy is excited to shoot additional fan thank-you videos in the future.

“Needless to say, we can't wait to make the next one when we hit 10 million!” she said.
